So, I didn't really keep very good track of my dog expenses this month. I've had a lot going on, ranging from work to moving, so I had a lot of other stuff to deal with.

Anywho, this is my best estimate of the costs this July.

Food
I bought a lot of chicken this month, since my craigslist stock has run out so I must purchase bone-in items for bone content. I got several 10 pound bags of chicken quarters and two whole chickens, varying from $0.70 - $0.88 a pound. I got a few packages of turkey backs/misc. for $0.70 a pound. A big chunk of the cost came from the local butcher. I stop in every now and then to get beef liver (theirs is the highest quality, and lowest price) and they happened to have beef heart and wild sockeye salmon scraps for $1.50 a pound! So, naturally I buy several pounds of the stuff for the dogs. I got some odd looks...

Toys
I visited a pet boutique-style shop "in the city" and bought two Planet Dog balls.

Vet/Medical
I got three types of dewormers, since I had none on-hand and wanted to try the fenbendazole to see if it would fix Conker's issues (it seems to have, which is a bit alarming, actually...) I got some ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate as well. I dewormed all the dogs with the fenbendazole then the pyrantel pamoate a few days later just to be sure, and will be starting up the ivermectin (heartworm prevention) this month since it's unusually hot and humid right now.

This month, I will be adding in Juneau and Sasha expenses since I buy their stuff, so why not include it. Not like I spent a ton on them anyways...

Food.
I bought a large (20lb) bag of rice for $11. I like rice, and so do the dogs, so I bought a big bag. I also got some beef liver for about $2.

Vet/Medical.
I got a refill on Sasha's Proin. Cost $31 for a 60 day supply. (I could get a perscription then order online, but i live in Oregon, and Proin is a controlled substance, so it's difficult to get it shipped here without paying extra. So, even if I did order it online for cheaper, the additional costs would make it the same, so I don't bother.)

Toys.
I got a 3 pack of ChuckIt! balls "Fetch Medley". It came with a ReBounce, Whistler, and Max Glow ball. The glow ball is more powerful than I thought it would be. It's still glowing when I get up in the morning before the sun is actually out.

Okay, so, like normal, I broke my "no food" rule. I'll have to do it again this month to at least get beef liver, and, hopefully, that will be all I need. My freezer is jam-packed so it's not like I can actually put anything else in there anyways...

I bought 3 10 pound packages of chicken quarters for $0.59 a pound, which is a KILLER deal around here. I also got a couple pork roasts for... $1.29, I think? Both of those both totaled around $18 each. I also got some beef liver for $2.

I do not usually buy treats these days, since cheese and pieces of meat are what I mostly use. Anywho, I bought a pound of "jerky" strips to use on walks, and I also got some beef treats and a slice of pig ear for Juneau when I took her to the petshop.

Another month of the year 2013 has gone by, and thankfully I didn't spend anywhere near the amount I did last month. I did break my "no food" rule, which, hopefully, I won't this month. But most likely will. Again.

I bought several dozen eggs. Two 18 packs for $3, and 6 dozens for $3. The regular dozen eggs went on sale for $0.50 cents after I bought the sale priced ($1.50 each) 18 packs. Figures. Still got a good deal on all those eggs though! I also got some turkey misc, about $5 worth for $0.69 a pound.

Gear.
I got a treat pouch for $2, a collapsible bowl for $2, and a collar for $9.50.

Supplements.
Got some MSM for $2.50.

Here it is, the first of 12 posts describing what I spend on Conker each month for the year 2013! Yay.


January 2013

Food.
I spent a lot more on this than I wanted to, but I kept finding good deals on kibbles and meat so... It adds up.
Kibble: First I got a 28.9 pound bag of EVO Red Meat for $35.75. These normally go for closer to $68, so there was no way I was passing that one up. Then I got a small bag each of HALO Surf & Turf, Canidae pureELEMENTS, Solid Gold Wee Bit, and Canyon Creek Chicken for $17 total from Petflow.
Raw: Over the month I picked up various turkey bits for $0.70-$1.80 per pound, two packages of lamb breast for I think $1.33 per pound, some ground beef for $1.40-$2 per pound, A pork shoulder for $1.10 per pound, and the baby beef for $10.

Treats/Chews.
I got 20 6 inch bullysticks from Petflow for $20.

Gear.
Six lights that attach to a collar for $1.50 each from Petflow. (three red, one pink, one blue, and one white)

Toys.
Two footlong rope toys from Walfart for $1 each. (one blue, one pink)


Thankfully that's it for January! Glad this month is gone so I don't keep running that total up. For the month of February I hope to not spend any money on food, since I've got more than enough for all three dogs for a while.

Money spent in October/November

I didn't buy hardly anything this month(s) due to me suddenly out of the blue moving to Alaska, since I haven't had the chance to shop for any pet stuff (I've been to two local feedstores like, three times total), nor do I have the time, and I just haven't needed anything really.

So, here's the total for October and November combined into one post.

I originally was not going to include the travel/vet expenses, but since I didn't actually spend any money in November, I included it for the heck of it.

Food.
I bought another 13 pound bag of EVO Red Meat (review coming soon!) since I am quite pleased with the food, and because Conker was transistioned to it and it is available locally so I did not have to switch him to something else. Because we all know how fun that can possibly be with him.

Supplements.
I bought another bottle of K9 Glucosamine shortly before I knew about the Alaska gig.

Travel.
It cost me $100 to fly Conker in the cargo hold.

Vet/Medical.
In order for Conker to fly, I heeded a health certificate. I had to get a regular exam in order to get the certificate, both of which cost money, and since Jennifer was concerned about Conker possibly bringing up fleas, I also got him some Frontline while i was there.

I once again misplaced my list of stuff I bought (it's on the computer, you'd think I can't lose something on the computer but yes, it's possible) but I've got a pretty good idea of what I spent this month.


September 2012

So... Here goes the breakdown.

Food.
I bought several things, most of which were completely unexpected. I got a bag of EVO Red Meat for cheaper than normal, a can of EVO Beef, some trials (Taste of the Wild Southwest Canyon and some Canidae canned fish thing), and some samples of various things like The Honest Kitchen stuff, Zuke's, and Fromm.
I also got some ground beef, beef ribs (Which Sasha broke another tooth on, so no more beef ribs for the dogs), some turkey misc, and a lamb neck.

Vet/Medical.
Conker hasn't been "properly" wormed since I got him, if you don't count heartworm meds, and I wanted to do that just to be sure he wasn't carrying anything that Heartguard doesn't kill.

Treats/Chews.
Conker got a small bully stick for passing the CGC and some treats from the Farmer's Market.

Etc.
I bought a freezer, and a timer thing for it.

Food.
I bought one bag of Nature's Variety Raw Boost Chicken which I will be trying out after the next bag of Before Grain (buffalo, also has chicken meal in it) to see if Conker actually has a problem with chicken-based non-raw foods or not. In the past he has, but recently he's been able to eat cooked chicken with no problems, so I am a bit confuzzled about it and would like to get it sorted out. Anywho, that originally cost $20 but not only was it on sale for $17, I had two coupons which I used (one for Petco, one for Nature's Variety) so I only spent $9 on it. Unfortunately Petco only had the chicken type in stock (for the size I wanted), so that's what I got. If they had another type then I'd have gone with something other than chicken.

I got some ground beef that was on sale for $7.20 at a measly $1.70 per pound! That is a KILLER deal for beef. I picked up a package of lamb stew meat for $1.40 ($1.80 per pound) and some turkey misc for $1.60 ($0.69 per pound).


Treats/Chews.
I got some trachea chews at the Farmer's Market. 6 slices for $1. I got $3 worth.


Toys.
I bought a tennis ball thing for the shelter dogs for $1. I do that every now and then.

July I didn't spend too much. I avoided going to the grocery and didn't buy anything from Winco when I went o Meford. I did end up with some more kibble, but that's because they were on sale.

I bought a 15 pound bag of Innova Red Meat for $19.50. Innova is having a formula/packaging chance, so the stuff in stock at Petco was on super sale. I bought a 4 pound bag of Halo Lamb kibble for $12 while in Medford. I got some miscellaneous turkey bits for about $3 as well.
I also bought a large bag of Before Grain Chicken for about $39 but that was for the Girls, so it's not included in the official total. 

Treats/Chews.
I bought $5 worth of trachea chews from the farmer's market.

This month... I kinda splurged. I was originally going to try to make ti a raw-only month, but certain circumstances (Conker's refusal of food) and several good deals made this month, a food-heavy month. I bought a LOT of food stuffs, both commercial and raw.

Lets see how much the total is.

June 2012

Raw foods.
I bought several pounds of beef heart (4 hearts) for about 1.70 per pound, totaling $10.65, and 18.3 pounds of chicken backs for $0.60 a pound for about $10.90, turkey misc for $0.99 per pound for $1.35, tripe (2 pounds) for $5.75, a pound of venison liver for $2, 5 tins of sardines for $0.80 a tin, 2 cans of mackerel for $1.75 a can, 3 cans of clams for $1.65 a can, and a can of salmon for $2.85.

That's $43.95 for raw materials.

Commercial foods.
A 4 pound bag of Fromm Beef Frittata for$13, a 5 pound bag of Fromm Duck and Sweet Potato for $14 ($1 off), a 6.6 pound bag of Before Grain Pork for $13.40, and a 6.6 pound bag of Before Grain Buffalo for $13.90.
I got a free bag of Fromm Duck and Sweet Potato, which otherwise would have cost $14.

That's $54.30 for commercial foods.

Treats/Chews.
I bought a bag of Zuke's salmon Mini Naturals for $5. No idea why. Some trachea chews at the farmer's market for $2 and some pig ear strips at Mini Pet Mart for $1.

Equipment.
I spotted an Outward Hound backpack for $10, figured I'd grab it and try it out, compare it to the Ruff Wear packs. It normally retails for about $30.


Lets see, since June is the half-year mark, I will post the 6 month total that I've spent on Conker so far.

Money spent in May

Wow, it's June already! The year is half over! That's crazy. You can see the writeup for April here.

This month was a food n' treats only month. I didn't spend too much, but due to a kibble purchase that drove the total up a bit higher than what it had been if I'd only bought a bag of chicken like I wanted to. But Conker being Conker, who is in a picky state right now, wouldn't allow that, so I had to buy the commercial food instead. Oh well.


May 2012

Lets see here. I bought some lamb organs at a farmer's market in Washington for about $7.50, and a bag of kibble for $16.25. That covers the food.

Treats/Chews.
I also got a bunch of treats at the GP farmer's market for $5 and some at MPM for $5 so that accounts for that part of the cost.

Not much at all, really, but if I'd bought the chicken instead of kibble it would have been $10 less. Thanks for being a jerk, Conker.
After this bag of kibble is gone I'm going to make Conker suck it up and eat his food. I'm going to try to make it a raw-only month to see what the cost of one of those is compared to a kibble month, or something like that.

Significantly less than March, but food shot way up.

Food.
I bought two bags of kibble and several cans for the food trials I am doing. I bought one 4.5 pound bag of Nature's Variety Instinct Salmon and various cans from the Instinct line and one from the Prairie line. I also got a bag of Wellness CORE Ocean and cans from the CORE, Chunks and Gravy, and 95% Toppers and Mixers lines.
Oh, and one package of turkey neck, liver, gizzard, and heart. For $1.

Treats/Chews.
I got several chews from the Farmer's Market on two weekends. Various things like tendons, bully sticks, and trachea slices. I won't be buying more tendons though, since Conker cannot digest those very well. I also got a couple bully sticks at the petshop, as well as a 1 pound bag of Go! Salmon kibbles to use as treats.


That's it for April! I didn't buy anything other than edibles, even though I lost Conker's martingale collar and leash (I know they're in this house somewhere) so instead I made a collar out of an old belt and a leash out of a rope and carabiner. Why buy more stuff when I can make it?

I am keeping track of how much I spend on Conker each month and doing a writeup of the expenses when that month of over. Last month's expenses are here.
Here is my Conker expenses for the month of March.


March has been, by far, the most expensive month this year. Not because of splurging, no, not that, but because this month contained the much dreaded vet visit.
Anyways, onto the tally.

March 2012

Again, I prettymuch doubled (and then some) what I spent last month.


Food.
I bought four canned things: Salmon, Mackerel, Sardine, Oyster.  I am cutting clams out of Conker's diet due to price, and will probably do the same with fish once my current stock runs out. The clams are being replaces with gizzard, the fish with a Vitamin D supplement.
I also got some liver for $1.90 a pound and gizzards for $1.50 a pound.

Treats/Chews.
After Conker's vet visit we went to a treat store and bought a Zuke's chew. The farmer's market has started up again, so I bought a bag of assorted chews for the dogs as well, and some pig ear strips at the petshop.

Vet/Medical.
It was time for Conker to have a vet visit for a general checkup ($44) and to get a 3 year rabies vaccine ($9.20). Unfortunately, the vet LIED TO MY FACE about the other vaccine he got. I THOUGHT it was a distemper/parvo only vax but really it was a 4-way combo. That really pissed me off, and I would have outright refused it if I knew what it really was and saved myself $17.10.
I also got Conker chipped, which cost $51 including lifetime registration (AVID), had him tested for heartworms ($28.70), and got some Heartguard Plus for the summer ($36.40).

Accessories.
I went to Ross (I never go there so it was novel) and found some dog stuff. They had a metal diner-holder thing, for bowls, for only $8 so I bought it. It came with two bowls and some junk. I also bought a heavy-duty stainless bowl for $3.50 that I think is totally badass.

Hopefully April won't cost as much.


I bought two bags of kibble and some cans at the end of March, but since they are to be used in April, will be counted towards April's monthly expenses.

I am keeping track of how much I spend on Conker each month and doing a writeup of the expenses when that month of over. Last month's expenses are here.
Here is my Conker expenses for the month of February. 

I spent a bit more than I did in January, but that is due to the purchase of several food-related items, some planned, others not.


February 2012

Food
I bought a much larger assortment of food items this month. The biggest purchase was rather unexpected. I ended up with a turkey back and a couple neck packages (they come with a heart, gizzard, and liver) that cost $.69 per pound, a whole chicken for $.88 per pound, a 10 pound bag of chicken quarters for $.69 per pound, and two (one package) pork shoulders for $1.50 per pound. I spent the most on the shoulders, which was the unexpected purchase.
I also got two cans of clams, a can of oysters, several tins of sardines, some oat bran, and a package of 4 frozen pig ears for $2 per pound.

Supplements
I am unsure if I should actually include this in February, or March, since the transaction has not gone through yet. Anywho, I bought two 400 count boxes of fish oil capsules from this place for $5 each, shipping $11.30. Compared to buying local, I am saving roughly $35 (on the low end in both price and quality, probably closer to $45) by purchasing them in such quantity from this supplier. They are not only for Conker, so it's worth it to buy so many capsules at one time. Plus capsules keep for quite a while compared to stuff in a bottle.

Grooming
I found a Kong Zoom Groom for $5.

Other
I bought a rope thing, a heavy-duty ring, and a bolt-snap for further modification of leashes.

I totally meant to do this on the first but spaced out.  Idea stolen from The House of Two Bows

I am only going to include Conker's expenses. While I may buy the food for Juneau and Sasha, I'm not using my money to do it. Same goes with vet expenses for those two. Stuff like toys, leashes, harnesses, etc. is included since I don't plan on leaving that here if/when I move out.
If I don't spend any money in any given category (food, vet/medical, accessories, whatever) then it won't be listed. I also tend to round up so the totals are a bit higher by a couple cents.

Conker got a new bag of Zuke's Mini Naturals since I had almost run out, a couple Z-Bones, and some Z-Fillet that we got at a killer deal.

Other
Since they count as mine, even though some of it's for Sasha and Juneau: Straps and buckles for the Approach Packs, as well as some O rings, bolt snaps, and rope thingies for the horse-leads I bought a while ago to make them double-sided.
